<!-- wp:more --> <!--more--> <!-- /wp:more -->

Black jaggery is not an ordinary item in Tamil Nadu. It is a precious item that is becoming increasingly rare. To what extent is it an important item? Two people in the village of Pattapurkulam near North Vijayanarayanam in Tirunelveli district broke into a palm climber’s garden and stole the jaggery to sell.
Two people have been arrested by the police. But that’s not important. The important change is that jaggery has become a rare item in Tamil Nadu to the extent that it is being stolen.
Everyone knows where jaggery comes from. It has become rare even in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, which produce the most jaggery in the state.
You might think that the demand for jaggery has increased due to the proliferation of jaggery coffee shops in every nook and cranny of Chennai after the corona lockdown.
But that’s not the reason. Until a few hundred years ago, the southern parts of Tamil Nadu were dotted with palm trees. There were many palm climbing families who lived a prosperous life, climbing palm trees at four in the morning to extract toddy and boil it into jaggery. However, in the last 50 years, the number of palm trees has decreased to an unprecedented level. The families who relied on it also found other occupations.
One of the main reasons why jaggery is still available even though it is sold at a high price is the people of 7 villages in the surrounding area of Udangudi in Thoothukudi district. They are still involved in climbing palm trees and related occupations. As a result, Udangudi has been awarded the geographical indication for jaggery.
The demand for jaggery may have increased today. But even before that, there was a huge demand for arrack, the brother of jaggery, in Tamil Nadu. To what extent is it? There are many people here who have died in droves after drinking kerosene thinking it is arrack.
As a result, the Tamil Nadu government announced prohibition. It harvested women’s votes in the election. At the same time, men’s votes are also needed. Only then may the government have realized the huge support for arrack. To prevent the common people from becoming addicted to alcohol and coming to the middle of the street, a ban was imposed on arrack but not on alcohol. That’s when these government liquor stores came into being. Tamils always want to be in a state of intoxication, both by alcohol and cinema. It is not surprising that this state of intoxication continues even today.
